Flowers have never been far away from my life since childhood. Inspired by my Great Grandmother and then Grandpa's love of gardening, my Mom and Aunt Susan have carried on the family tradition with their own award winning gardens. My Mom even owned a landscaping company while I was growing up. Her proposals and design maps were pieces of art within themselves.
In high school, I worked part-time at a florist and was trained as a designer. I skipped school every Valentines Day to work! And you should have seen my prom flowers- a posy of orchids! Weddings were my favorite, especially traveling to the sites and seeing the entire design come together. I loved working there and considered a career as a florist but ended up moving to NYC to attend The Fashion Institute of Technology.
Once in NYC, I was happy to discover the floral district was one block from my school. I would wonder the wholesalers' and get lost in the rows and rows of flowers. I also discovered MJTrim, at the time there was nothing like it, an entire store devoted to ribbons! The most beautiful satins and hand dyed silks in every color imaginable.
Post college I worked for Agent Provocateur, a luxury lingerie designer with the most beautiful and detailed collections. Working in lux fashion was definitely a treat (and had its perks!) but I found the most rewarding part of the job was the connection to the clients. I didn't expect to form the relationships that I did, but I was pleasantly surprised. I worked there for 8 years and walked numerous clients through first dates, proposals, weddings and baby announcements! Once I ran into a client and her husband at a coffee shop. She introduced me as "Kate, the girl who makes the magic happen!" We had a quite a giggle (and I turned red).
As I launch Love & Luster, I hope to bring my love of design and flowers to my clients, but to also be a small part of their love journey.
